How to calculate percentage

Last updated: 2026-06-19. Author: Mahad and Mehdi Developers.

Percentage compares a part with a whole and expresses the relationship out of 100.

The most common formula is part divided by whole multiplied by 100. If a student scores 72 marks out of 90, the percentage is 72 divided by 90 multiplied by 100, which equals 80 percent.

Percentages are used in school marks, discounts, profit margins, tax, interest, attendance, growth reports, business analytics, and everyday comparisons. A calculator saves time because the same idea appears in many different forms.

There are several percentage questions people ask: what is X percent of Y, X is what percent of Y, what is the percentage increase, and what is the percentage decrease. Each question uses a slightly different formula, so labels matter.

For percentage increase, subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. For percentage decrease, subtract the new value from the old value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100.

When using percentages for money, always check rounding. Small rounding differences can matter in tax, billing, interest, and accounting reports.

Online percentage calculators are best for quick checking, homework support, discount planning, and business estimates, but official results should still follow the required formula from your school, office, or policy.
